On 19 – 21 September 2011, the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) in cooperation with the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), will be is hosting an international mine action workshop in Siem Reap, entitled “Enhanced Operational Approaches through the Application of Land Release Methodology”.
Over 100 guests will be attending, including international experts in mine action and victim assistance from 23 countries from the Middle East, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. The workshop will be an opportunity for participants to share their experiences about Land Release implementation in different countries in order to enhance the Land Release process and this will lead to better practices.
Workshop Objectives:
· Explore Theory and Practice in the Land Release Process
· Present and discuss theoretical and practical aspects in the developing operator Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
· Explore different techniques and demining tools to enhance operational effectiveness
· Explore flexibilities in Land Release practice
· Document lessons learned to develop and enhance practical guide for sharing with various mine affected countries and members of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) (and the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) State Parties.
The workshop is aimed to raise the profile of Land Release with mine affected countries and interested organizations in the lead up to the 11th Meeting of States Parties (also known as the 11th MSP) of the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention which Cambodia will host and preside over from 28 November to 2 December 2011. The workshop supports the implementation of the Ottawa convention’s Article 5: Destruction of anti-personnel mines in mined areas and Article 6.2 under the International cooperation and assistance and also complements actions under the Cartagena action plan.
This workshop also provides a platform for continued discussion among all State Parties and interests groups during a side event of the convention of 11th MSP in November.
The workshop is aimed principally at mine action organisations (national authorities, mine action centres and operators). The format of the workshop will consist of a mix of formal presentations and plenary and working group discussions. The workshop will be held in English.
